Golf de la Grande Bastide

Golf de la Grande Bastide sits on high ground in Châteauneuf-de-Grasse, and that defines it: wide views over the hinterland down to the Mediterranean. Cabell Robinson, a respected American course architect, designed it to sit naturally in rolling Provençal country with pines, oaks and lavender fields.

The par 72 layout runs to about 5,770 m (6,300 yards) from the back tees. The difficulty is balanced: good golfers get a proper test and mid-handicappers still enjoy their round. Robinson aimed for strategic fairness, with water on several holes, bunkers guarding the approach corridors and green complexes that reward precise shots. The slope of the land forms a natural amphitheatre, which works well for spectators at tournaments.

Grande Bastide is less busy than Royal Mougins or Golf d’Opio, which suits players who want a quieter round. The views and the Provençal setting stay with you, and at about 8 minutes from Grasse it is easy to reach without feeling cut off.

Cabell Robinson is known for designs that pair natural looks with strategic play. At Grande Bastide he routed the holes to make the most of the changes in level and the long views. From the raised tees you look down the fairways and out to the Mediterranean. Downhill approaches play tricks on the eye, so club selection needs care. On several holes water is both hazard and view.

The par 72 layout balances length and precision. The par 3s ask for accurate iron play over well-placed hazards. Good players reach the par 5s in two, but a wayward drive costs you. The bunkers guard the main approach lines.
