From Celto-Ligurian hill settlement to olive village
Opio’s history goes back before the Romans. It began as a Celto-Ligurian hill fort, which Roman legions destroyed in 154 BC. The medieval period left the most visible mark, above all the Church of Saint-Trophime, built in the 12th century and still the spiritual centre of Opio. The original bastide layout, cut into the hillside above the Plain of Grasse, shows how carefully the village was planned.
Opio has been known for its olive oil for centuries. The Moulin d’Opio, the village’s old olive mill, still presses olives each season. Ancient olive trees still dot the landscape. Every autumn the harvest brings the village together, much as it has for generations.
Today Opio is a quiet commune of 2,527 residents (INSEE, 2023), with Grasse and its perfume houses about 6 km to the west and the Sophia Antipolis technology park to the south-east. The village has chosen to stay quiet, keeping tourism and new building in check. It draws buyers who want olive groves and quiet, and for whom the Golf d’Opio Valbonne estate is part of daily life in the countryside.
