Robert von Hagge's design at Royal Mougins exemplifies his signature approach: bold use of elevation, strategic bunkering, and water hazards that punish imprecision without penalizing ambitious play. The course unfolds across natural topography with holes routed to maximize views of the surrounding Riviera landscape. Some holes perch on elevated plateaus; others nestle in valleys with water carrying requirements. The variety keeps golfers engaged and forces adjustment of strategy hole to hole.

Signature holes include par-4s with elevated greens requiring precise iron play, a par-3 playing over water with the green angled to reward shape-shots, and a dramatic closing par-5 with water along the left that rewards aggressive play or punishes it. Back nine routing returns toward the clubhouse with a mix of length and precision holes. The course has three water hazards in play, numerous bunkers protecting fair approach corridors, and greens that slope away from approach angles, demanding good course management.

Turf is maintained to championship standards year-round. Bermuda grass fairways are mowed tight; greens are firm and fast (typically stimp 11–12). The Riviera's Mediterranean climate supports lush growth, and the hinterland elevation (approximately 300m) provides cooler conditions than coastal courses, reducing water stress and supporting playable conditions even in summer.
